VarioFold: Fully Automatic Bag Folding

The VarioFold automates the process of folding bag liners inside boxes or crates. Often installed after a CombiPlast or EasyPlast bag inserter, the VarioFold helps manufacturers increase productivity, reduce manual labor, and improve packaging consistency.

Designed for continuous production, the machine automatically folds liners with precision, accommodates random box sizes, and can be equipped with integrated checkweighing, reject handling, and a box closer. Whether used as a standalone machine or integrated into an existing packaging line, the VarioFold delivers consistent packaging results and ensures every package leaves the line ready for transport.

5 steps

How it works

Step 1

Box positioning

At the infeed of the VarioSeal the box (or your product carrier) is squared to ensure its position. Optionally the weight of the box is checked in this step. Rejected boxes are ejected onto an error conveyor.

Step 2

Box lifting

The box is lifted towards the folding unit. Here two vacuum cups pick up the bag on the short sides of the box.

Step 3

Bag spreading

The box is now moved downwards to release the bag from the box flaps. Two spreading fingers and a vacuum nozzle are placed in the bag. The spreading fingers take over the bag from the vacuum cups and spread it. Optionally a vacuum is applied on the bag in this step.

Step 4

Bag sealing

Now the bag is sealed by two sealing bars. Our knowledge of sealing pressure, - temperature and -time ensures a perfect seal. Optionally the waste material above the seal is cut and removed in this step. If desired a perforation is added for easy bag opening!

Step 5

Optionally: box closing

Optionally the box is closed by the integrated taper. The result: your product safely packed in a closed bag and closed box! Ready to be transported to your customers.

FAQ

What does the VarioFold do?

The VarioFold automatically folds bag liners inside boxes or crates after filling. By neatly folding the excess liner into the package, it creates a consistent packaging result that is ready for sealing, storage or transport.

The machine can operate as a stand-alone solution or as part of a fully automated packaging line.

How does an automatic bag folding machine work?

An automatic bag folding machine receives a filled box or crate with an open bag liner, positions the package, and folds the excess liner according to the selected recipe before transferring it to the next step in the packaging process.

Depending on the machine configuration, the process can include integrated checkweighing, reject handling, and automatic box closing.

When is the VarioFold the right solution?

The VarioFold is designed for manufacturers looking to automate bag folding while maintaining flexibility.

It is particularly suitable for applications where multiple box sizes are processed, larger packaging formats are used, or additional quality control features such as checkweighing and reject handling are required.

Which products are suitable for automatic bag folding?

The VarioFold is suitable for products packed in bag-in-box or bag-in-crate packaging where the liner protects against moisture, dust, dirt, or dehydration.

Typical applications include food products, pet food, ingredients, seeds, animal feed, and industrial bulk products.

What box and crate sizes can the VarioFold handle?

The VarioFold processes a wide range of box and crate dimensions.

Typical size range:

  • Length: 11.8–24.4 in (300–620 mm)
  • Width: 7.9–17.7 in (200–450 mm)
  • Height: 2.4–13.8 in (60–350 mm)
  • C-height: 7.9–19.7 in or 7.9–25.6 in (200–500 mm or 200–650 mm), depending on the machine configuration

Its automatic adjustment capability makes it suitable for production lines processing multiple packaging formats.

How does the VarioFold handle different box sizes?

The VarioFold automatically adjusts to different box sizes using stored machine recipes.

Machine settings are saved in the HMI, allowing operators to switch between products without manual mechanical adjustments. This reduces changeover time and increases production flexibility.

How many boxes or crates can the VarioFold process per minute?

The VarioFold processes up to 6 boxes or crates per minute, depending on the product, packaging dimensions, and machine configuration.

The machine is designed for applications where flexibility, accurate bag folding, and handling of larger packaging formats are more important than maximum production speed.

Can the VarioFold be integrated into an existing packaging line?

Yes. The VarioFold can be installed as a stand-alone machine or integrated into new or existing packaging lines.

It is commonly positioned after a bag inserter and can be combined with equipment such as checkweighers, reject systems, and box closers to create a fully automated packaging process.

Can the VarioFold be equipped with checkweighing and reject handling?

Yes. The VarioFold can be equipped with an integrated checkweigher and reject system.

Each package can be weighed before folding. If the measured weight falls outside predefined limits, or another quality issue is detected, the package can automatically be removed from the production flow for inspection or correction.

Can the VarioFold be combined with a box closer?

Yes. An integrated box closer can be added to automatically seal boxes after the bag has been folded.

The integrated design eliminates the need for an additional conveyor and simplifies integration into the packaging line. It can also handle slightly overfilled boxes.

How is the VarioFold operated?

The VarioFold is operated through a 15-inch touchscreen HMI.

Operators can access machine settings, operating modes, production statistics, and diagnostics from a single interface. Product recipes can be stored and recalled, enabling faster and more consistent product changeovers.

What remote support and performance monitoring options are available?

Every VarioFold is equipped with an IXON router for secure remote support. This enables Niverplast technicians to perform troubleshooting, software updates, and remote diagnostics whenever required.

The VarioFold can also be connected to DAMORE (Data Monitoring & Remote Engineering). Through an online dashboard, users can monitor live machine performance, OEE, downtime trends, and historical production data to identify production issues and improve packaging efficiency.

What are the dimensions of the VarioFold?

The VarioFold has a compact footprint, making it easy to integrate into both new and existing packaging lines.

Typical machine dimensions are:

  • Without integrated box closer: 129.9 × 52.0 in (3,300 × 1,320 mm)
  • With integrated box closer: 185.4 × 52.0 in (4,710 × 1,320 mm)
When should I choose the VarioFold instead of the EasyFold?

Both machines automate bag folding but are designed for different applications.

The EasyFold is intended for high-speed production with standard packaging formats. The VarioFold is better suited for applications requiring greater flexibility, automatic handling of multiple box sizes, larger packaging formats, or integrated quality control features such as checkweighing and reject handling.

The most suitable solution depends on the required throughput, packaging formats, and level of automation.

What are the main advantages of the VarioFold?

The VarioFold helps manufacturers automate bag folding while maintaining flexibility across different packaging formats.

Key advantages include:

  • Automatic bag folding inside boxes and crates
  • Consistent packaging quality
  • Automatic handling of multiple box sizes
  • Integrated recipe management
  • Optional checkweighing and reject handling
  • Integration with box closers and packaging lines
  • Secure remote support via IXON
  • Compact footprint for straightforward line integration
