5 steps

How it works

Step 1

Box positioning

At the infeed of the VarioSeal the box (or your product carrier) is squared to ensure its position. Optionally the weight of the box is checked in this step. Rejected boxes are ejected onto an error conveyor.

Step 2

Box lifting

The box is lifted towards the seal unit. Here two vacuum cups pick up the bag on the short sides of the box.

Step 3

Bag spreading

The box is now moved downwards to release the bag from the box flaps. Two spreading fingers and a vacuum nozzle are placed in the bag. The spreading fingers take over the bag from the vacuum cups and spread it. Optionally a vacuum is applied on the bag in this step.

Step 4

Bag sealing

Now the bag is sealed by two sealing bars. Our knowledge of sealing pressure, - temperature and -time ensures a perfect seal. Optionally the waste material above the seal is cut and removed in this step. If desired a perforation is added for easy bag opening!

Step 5

Optionally: box closing

Optionally the box is closed by the integrated taper. The result: your product safely packed in a closed bag and closed box! Ready to be transported to your customers.

FAQ

Everything you want to know about the VarioSeal

What does the VarioSeal do?

The VarioSeal is an automatic bag sealing machine designed to close bags inside boxes or crates. It positions the filled box or crate, lifts and spreads the bag, removes excess air and seals the bag using heat. This helps create a consistent, closed bag-in-box package while reducing manual handling and improving line efficiency.

How does the VarioSeal close a bag inside a box or crate?

The box or crate is fed into the machine, after which suction mouths lift the bag and fold down the side flaps. Spreading fingers then take over the bag and keep it in the right position. Finally, two sealing bars press together to create the seal. If required, the outer box can also be closed after the bag has been sealed.

How does the VarioSeal create a consistent seal?

The VarioSeal creates a consistent seal by controlling the key sealing parameters: pressure, temperature and time. Two sealing bars press the bag together and apply heat to close the film. This controlled process helps ensure a reliable seal, even in continuous production environments where repeatability is important.

What capacity can the VarioSeal reach?

The VarioSeal can reach a capacity of up to 12 boxes per minute, depending on the box, bag, product and machine configuration. The actual speed in production always depends on the full packaging process, including product flow, bag quality, box dimensions and any additional options such as checkweighing, rejecting or box closing.

Which bags, films and box sizes can the VarioSeal handle?

The VarioSeal can process a wide range of bag types and film thicknesses, from ultra-thin films of around 10 microns up to more than 200 microns, depending on the application. It is designed for bag-in-box and bag-in-crate processes and can handle varying bag and box requirements. For the best result, the exact combination of product, bag and box is tested in advance.

How does the VarioSeal deal with air inside the bag before sealing?

Before sealing, the VarioSeal can evacuate air from the bag using a suction probe. This prevents too much air from staying inside the bag and creating a “balloon” effect. By reducing excess air, the bag is easier to seal and the box is easier to close properly afterwards.

What happens if a box or seal does not meet the required quality?

The VarioSeal can be equipped with a reject system. If a seal goes wrong, the box can be rejected onto a roller conveyor instead of continuing further down the line. The machine also includes warning signals and on-screen failure visualisation, helping operators quickly identify and solve issues during production.

How does the VarioSeal deal with boxes that have the wrong weight?

With an integrated checkweigher, the VarioSeal can weigh the box before sealing. If the weight does not match the memorised target weight, the opened box can be rejected with the bag still open. This allows operators to correct the weight before the box continues in the packaging process. The checkweigher can even be certified, depending on the application.

Can the VarioSeal also close the outer box?

Yes, the VarioSeal can be equipped with an integrated box taper to close the outer box after the bag has been sealed. This can remove the need for an additional box closing conveyor or separate case sealer. The integrated taper has motorised settings and is designed to absorb slightly overfilled boxes while still closing them properly.

Can the VarioSeal be added to an existing packaging line?

Yes, the VarioSeal can be used as a stand-alone bag sealing machine or integrated into a wider packaging line. Niverplast can also supply conveyors before or after the VarioSeal, and these conveyors can be controlled from the VarioSeal with an additional control cabinet. During engineering, the product flow, available space, box handling and existing line components are taken into account.

What should I consider when choosing a left- or right-handed VarioSeal?

The choice between a left- or right-handed VarioSeal depends on the layout of your production area. Important factors include the direction of the box flow, operator access, available floor space, connection points, maintenance access and how the machine connects to upstream and downstream equipment. The right layout helps keep the line efficient, accessible and safe to operate.

Is the VarioSeal suitable for Modified Atmosphere Packaging?

Yes, the VarioSeal can be configured for Modified Atmosphere Packaging with a gas flush option. In this setup, a double probe can remove air from the bag and add protective gas before sealing. For this application, barrier film bags are available and the product, bag and box combination should always be tested first.

Can the VarioSeal remove excess bag material after sealing?

Yes, the VarioSeal can be equipped with a cut-off option to remove excess material above the seal. This gives the final package a cleaner and neater appearance. The removed material can be collected in a waste bin, helping to keep the packaging process organised and the final package presentation consistent.

How easy is the VarioSeal to operate and adjust?

The VarioSeal is operated through a large 15-inch HMI screen. Operators can view the operating mode, machine adjustments and failure analysis directly on the screen. In case of a malfunction, the HMI can show a visual indication of the issue, including a picture and a suggested solution, helping operators respond quickly.

What support is available after installation?

The VarioSeal comes with remote support possibilities through a standard Ixon router. Niverplast can also provide DAMORE, which collects and stores machine data in the cloud. Through a user-friendly portal, customers can view live machine information, OEE data and historical data. Service contracts for preventive maintenance, support and spare parts are also available.
