Pick and place robots are one of the most commonly utilized automation machines in the food packaging industry. It's a highly automated, time-saving solution to quickly pick products, such as bakery products, off the belt and placing them gently in a box.
There are different ways to deploy how the robot grabs the products, as example by using vacuum technique or by grippers. In this robot line that we developed, we pick up the products by grippers. We chose this method as it has several advantages over using vacuum:
1. High product care
Especially with bread products, it is necessary to handle the products with care. We do not want to leave imprints or damages on the product. Even if there are seeds or pits on the bread, they must remain on it during the packaging process. The special gripper technique used ensures careful product handling.
2. Lead time reduction
One of the main goals of automation is to reduce lead time. One condition is that you ensure that the process can continue continuously. Changing tools or changing a machine in the meantime causes delays, so you always want to avoid unnecessary stops. Changing vacuum cups is not necessary; the fingers of the gripper can handle a large product variation.
3. No air required
Obviously bread crumbs and fine dust are present in a bread processing environment, but in order to work food safe according to HACCP standards, it is preferable that no contaminated air is drawn in to create a vacuum for picking up the products. In the method of pick and place operation which we chose no air is needed. This also means that less fragile technology is used into the machine, which increases process security.
